A Tennessee man landed himself in Jail after fleeing from local law enforcement. On September 30th, at around 7:30 pm, a White County Officer was dispatched to a possible drunk driver on IL Route 1 between Crossville and Grayville. The Officer was advised that a passerby noticed a vehicle, described as a 4 door gray car with Tennessee license plates, on the side of Route 1 going in reverse and drive multiple times. The vehicle was also seen traveling south bound in the North bound lane, and almost struck a vehicle head on.
As the Officer was responding to the call, he observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspected drunk driver at South Cross Street and Fifth Street in Crossville. The Officer then conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver who identified himself as Barry Smith, 37, of 1127 6th Avenue North, Nashville, TN. Smith told the officer he was on his way to St Louis. After Smith as unable to locate his license and registration, he was asked to step out of the vehicle. The Officer noticed that Smith’s pupils were enlarged and asked Smith if he had taken anything or was drinking. Smith said he hadn’t and that he was just tired due to the long drive. While the officer was checking for a valid license and warrants, he discovered that Smith was wanted in Tennessee for a warrant for violation of probation. As the Officer confronted Smith about the warrant, Smith jumped back into his vehicle and a high speed chase ensued towards Carmi.
Once Officers were able to get Smith to stop and cuffed, a search of the vehicle was conducted. Smith was found to be in possession of 76.72 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 3.79 grams of an unknown white powdery substance, 27 grams of cannabis, some pills, and numerous individual plastic baggies, one filled with unused needles
Smith was taken into custody and booked in the White County Jail. All items found were transported by an officer to the White County Sheriffs office.
Smith is being held at the White County Jail at this time on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a Police Officer and possession of controlled substance.
