Carmi City Council Meeting Held

The Carmi City Council held their regular meeting on Tuesday night. Although it was a fairly quick meeting, some big decisions were made.

First on the agenda was approval for the Carmi Police Department to withdraw from the agreement with White County in sharing the building that currently houses both the Police Department and the Sheriff’s office.  After discussing it two weeks ago at the Carmi City Council meeting, leaders signed off to officially make the move. Carmi Mayor Jeff Pollard says the former Leggett’s Market, located at 703 Oak Street, will make a suitable location and can be obtained for $70,000, which the city plans to purchase in two payments of $35,000. One, this November, and the balance next year.

Also Tuesday night following a public hearing, Carmi Police off Joshua Moore, his wife Kacy and their two young children gained approval to place a modular home at 309 College Blvd, on the premises where their house burned in mid July. The Moore’s say they expect it could be April of next year or later before the home is ready to be situated. Councilmen Jim Totten and Tracy Nelson made the motion and second, as the Moore’s live in the Ward they represent.

Council also passed an ordinance establishing minimum and maximum setbacks for the city’s public water supply wells #5 & #6.

Mayor Pollard says his office has received several calls recently about street lights that are not working.  He’s asking for patience as the replacements are currently on back order and says city workers will get to replacing burnt out lights as soon as possible.

There was no closed session and Council adjourned just after a quarter till 6pm.  The Carmi Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and are due back in session on October 19th at 5:30pm at 225 East Main Street.
