WROY/WRUL Local Sports Recap

The Carmi-White County Bulldog football team kicks off the 2024 season tonight as they host the Flora Wolves at Harrington-Jeffries Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs went 7-3 in 2023, in a season where injuries and lack of depth played major factors. Despite the setbacks, the Bulldogs were able to make the playoffs and host a playoff game, but ran into a buzzsaw in Breese Mater Dei in the 1st Round of the IHSA Playoffs. CWC lost 8 seniors, all 8 started on both sides of the football, leaving plenty of shoes to be filled in 2024.

Not only will the Bulldogs look different in terms of personnel, but in terms of formation as well. The Bulldogs plan to shift to the double-wing, foot-to-foot offense, ran in previous years by Fairfield and Johnston City.

The Flora Wolves won just 3 games last year, but they are bringing back some experience, including starting quarterback Parker Helm, who was 2nd in the BDC in passing yards last season. It will be key for the Bulldogs to key in on Helm both in and outside of the pocket.

2024 will also be the final season for head coach Kurt Simon. Simon took over as head coach of the Bulldogs in 1997, and in his 28 years he has led the Bulldogs to 159 victories, 18 playoff appearances, 3 Black Diamond Conference Championships, and 3 undefeated regular seasons.

Fans who can’t attend tonight’s game will be able to listen on 97.3 FM WRUL and will be able to watch on the WRUL Sports YouTube Channel.

Kickoff is set for 7 PM, the Taylor Eye Care pre-game show will begin at 6:45 PM.

Junior high baseball and softball hosted Mt. Carmel yesterday afternoon.
The Bullpups won by a final of 12-2 to improve to 4-2 on the year.
The Lady Bullpups fell by a final of 16-4 to drop to 6-7 on the year.
Softball will play in the Marion tournament tomorrow, both teams will host Albion on Wednesday.

The Carmi-White County Volleyball team will take part in the Fairfield Lady Mule Kick Off tournament tomorrow. They will face Woodlawn at 8:30 AM, Oblong at 9:30, and Carbondale at 1:30 PM in pool play, with a placed game later in the afternoon or evening.
