Bulldogs on Wrong Side of Bizarre Comeback

The Carmi-White County Bulldog baseball fell to Mt. Vernon, Indiana at home Monday afternoon by a final score of 14-13 in extra innings.

It was all Bulldogs early, a 2-run double by Gavin Holloman put Carmi in front 2-0 after 1 inning of play.

After a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd, the Bulldogs then plated 5 more runs to jump ahead 7-0 thanks to an RBI single by Travor Mason, and RBIs by Kade Stockton, Caleb Seibers and Ty Hollingsworth.

This felt like a game that Carmi was going to run away with, it was only a matter of how long it was going to take them to do it.

Mt. Vernon was able to score twice in the top of the 3rd inning, but the Bulldogs still held a comfy 5 run lead.

That 5 run lead turned back into a 7 run lead when Mason brought home 2 more runs on an RBI single to extend CWC’s lead to 9-2 heading into the 4th.

This is when everything changed.

After a fly out and a fielders choice, Carmi still led 9-2 with 2 outs in the top of the 4th inning. All of the sudden a Wildcat double, walk, walk, double and single cut the Bulldog lead to just 1 and the scoreboard read 9-8 after 4 innings of play.

Again, the Bulldogs got two quick outs in the top of the 5th inning, but all of the sudden after two Wildcat walks, 2 Bulldog errors, a batter hit by a pitch, and a base hit, Mt. Vernon led 12-9.

Carmi left two runners stranded in the bottom of the 5th and the Wildcats added another in the top of the 6th to score 11-unanswered runs to take a 13-9 lead.

Now the Bulldogs had to play catch-up, and thanks to a Zach Roark double, singles by Cade Allen and Travor Mason, and a sacrifice fly from Caleb Seibers, they were able to tie it up at 13.

Neither team scored in the 7th inning, and Mt. Vernon was able to get their first 3 batters on base to start the 8th inning.

A bloop single by Mt. Vernon’s Logan Clowers brought in what ended up being the game-winning run as the Wildcats went ahead 14-13 and the Bulldogs could not answer in the home half of the 8th.

The loss drops Carmi to 3-5 (1-1 BDC) on the year.

In the loss, the Bulldogs committed 4 errors, which was actually less than the 5 errors that Mt. Vernon committed. The real mistakes for the Bulldogs came on the pitchers mound as Carmi walked a total of 13 batters, 6 of them were hit by pitches.

At the plate,
Travor Mason went 4-6 with 3 RBI.
Gavin Holloman went 2-6 with 2 RBI.
Cade Allen went 4-5 with an RBI.
Zack Roark went 1-4 with 2 RBI.
Mitchel Edwards went 1-2.
Caleb Seibers, Kade Stockton, Landon Driscoll and Tyson Spicer all scored runs in the game.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Flora at Eckerle Park.
