Spence Signs to Run at Vincennes

Carmi-White County senior Tanner Spence has announced his commitment to continue his Track & Cross-Country career at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana.

“Spence breaks another record,” or “Spence runs a new PR,” or “Spence finishes in 1st Place,” have all been frequent sentences during the last 4 years in both Cross-Country and Track for Tanner Spence.

In Cross Country, Tanner was a 3-time 2nd place finisher in the Black Diamond Conference, 2-time BDC MVP, IHSA State Qualifier, and ran a personal best time of 15:31 at sectionals this past fall.

Spence has has peaked the interest of numerous area colleges and universities over the past 12 months, but ultimately made the decision to commit to Vincennes University.

“VU was a great small college, it really seemed tightly knit and everyone enjoyed each other’s company,” said Spence.

“The team presence was great. The guys on the team really seemed like they wanted me to be apart of their team. Not only does Coach (Tyler) Steigenga care about my performance on the track, but he made it clear that my grades were of vital importance and I’m glad the team has someone to push them like that.”

Tanner’s parents, Brad and Kim have been aside Tanner throughout his recruitment journey, and VU made an impact on them as well.

“After we visited VU, Tanner’s mom and I knew Tanner was excited about their offer,” said Tanner’s dad, Brad Spence.

“We are truly happy with his decision. His mother and I can’t wait to see what his future holds. We know he is extremely self motivated, disciplined, and driven to do what he can to help his team succeed.”

Spence’s high school career isn’t over yet, the Bulldog track team will wrap up their regular season this week. Tanner Spence will go down as one of the greatest runners in CWC history, and one of the best students to roam the halls of CWCHS.

Congratulations to Tanner Spence, and best of luck at Vincennes University!
