Speakers offered for September, Recovery Month
Egyptian Health Department’s Substance Use Prevention, Recovery and Treatment (SI SUPRT) Council are celebrating the nation’s 31st National Recovery Month throughout September. National Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery from alcohol and other drugs.
The theme for 2020 National Recovery Month is Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections. Local celebrations will carry this theme in two events in a series called “Speak up for Recovery.” On September 19 from 2-4 p.m. two members of the SI SUPRT Council will share their experience on what recovery is in a presentation called What is Recovery? The event will be conducted via Zoom and Facebook Live.
A second speaker session will be held via Zoom and Facebook Live on September 22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Former Carmi area resident Jeff McPeek will share his recovery success, and author, educator and renowned presenter Mark Sanders will share inspiration on changing intergenerational patterns of addiction. CEUs for various professions will be offered for this presentation. Jeff is a former resident of Harrisburg and Carmi, a person in recovery for four years.

Each September, Recovery Month works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible. Locally, a coalition of community members and public service agencies meet monthly to contribute to building a supportive vision and carrying out a long-term strategic plan for local systems to support people in long-term recovery.
The local SI SUPRT Council is seeking people who live in Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline and White counties to contribute to building a supportive vision and carrying out a long-term strategic plan for local systems to support people in long-term recovery. The ROSC Council is working with
community members to embrace statewide objectives locally to create culture that builds and nurtures recovery, builds capacity and infrastructure to support a recovery-oriented system of care, and develops a commitment to implement and sustain a recovery-oriented system of care. Work teams are established to carry out a strategic plan which sets a priority for stigma reduction related to substance use disorders and treatment, creating positive messages about recovery and creating monthly public events that celebrate recovery.
The SI SUPRT Council meets the first Wednesday of each month, via Zoom, from noon-1:30. For more information, please call Cain at 618-294-8322. This project is supported in part by the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery, as part of the Social Services Block Grant award from the Federal Administration for Children and Families.
