Scout Master Spencer Coe Speaks With Carmi Rotary Club

The Carmi Rotary club got an update on the local scouting program on Thursday from scout master Spencer Coe.

Spencer told the group that he has been digging into the history of scouting in Carmi, and discovered that in a 1962 news story, it was stated that the Carmi scouts had 125 members, and was the biggest club in the state, and possible in the country!

He went on to tell the Rotarians about some of the recent events for the scouts. They recently completed another camp out at the Ford Center in Evansville. He said they, along with all the other packs in the Buffalo Trace Council watched a hockey game, then a movie, then camped out inside the large Ford Center. When asked if they actually slept, he said that his group found a quiet corner, and most of the kids were asleep by 1:00 in the morning.

Spencer told the club that the scouts had their first big fund raising event this year at Corn Day, where they sold “Tacos in a bag”. It went over incredibly big, and the scouts made six hundred dollars for the day. That money has been used for all of the events the club has done, making it where parents are not having to spend their own money for the various activities.

The next big event for the local pack will the Pine Wood Derby, which will be held on Saturday, March 11th. The group is currently looking for an indoor facility big enough to handle the large number of entries this big day usually brings. As the day gets closer, they will also be reaching out to local folks who might be interested in judging the contest.

Rotarian Tom Logan made a motion for the Rotary club to donate $150 to the pack to pay for their recharter fee. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

The Rotary club is just a week away from the “Super Chili for that Super Football Game”. The Rotarians will be selling quarts of their world-famous chili on Friday, February 10th, so customers can have it ready to go for the big game. Pick up your chili at Haskell’s Chiropractic on Oak Street here in Carmi. Quart jars go for twelve dollars and can be purchased in the parking lot of the office. Serving will start at 4:00 and continue until the last jar is sold.

Finally, the Rotary Spring Trivia is just around the corner, this year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 11th at the American Legion on Oak Street. As in year’s past, there will be four rounds of ten questions each, from such categories as: history, pop culture, food, the Bible, and many more. There will be cash prizes awarded to the top three finishers. The entry fee is $40 per four-person team and can be paid the night of the contest.

In other club business, guest speaker Spencer Coe won the 50/50 drawing and managed to capture the cash prize. Janice Parks was named as the day’s phantom.

The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this civic organization is welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
