At around 7:30 PM on March 16th, Deputy Matt Wicker of the White County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by three Carmi Police Officers, went to Valter Drive in Carmi concerning a domestic dispute.
When they arrived they spoke with Melinda Rankin, who said that 45 year old William Browning and 35 year old Tosha Rankin, both of Carmi, began arguing. She said William began throwing things around her house and yelling at both her and Tosha, acting crazy because he was coming down off of drugs. Deputy Wicker asked where Browning was, as he was not there when the officers arrived, and Melinda said he ran out the door as she was calling 911.
There were some items on the floor of the house from Browning throwing them, a broken glass ashtray on the floor, as well as some blinds hanging on the front door which had been broken.
Melinda Rankin agreed to sign a complaint for the damage and gave a written statement.
The damaged items were photographed from inside the living room.
A report was sent to the State’s Attorney for his consideration.
Tosha Rankin said she didn’t want to say anything about the incident, and stated multiple times that she was very upset with Melinda signing a complaint against Browning.
