President Rice Discusses SIC Core Values

HARRISBURG, Ill. (June 11, 2020) – While the pandemic has created so many health, societal and economic challenges, we cannot help but reflect on the pain and suffering happening in our country regarding diversity, inclusion and social justice. Southeastern Illinois College promotes core values such as “fairness” and “compassion,” creating an environment free from self-interest, prejudice or favoritism. SIC demonstrates a genuine interest, concern and respect for others. If we claim to be part of the SIC family, we live to promote and live by these values. For those who don’t believe racism is evil, and that abuse is wrong, then they don’t understand SIC.

The College mourns any social injustice, and in particular to fellow human beings of color during this time of great pain in our society. Many have turned to the inspiring rhetorical messages of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to provide comfort. One of my favorite quotations of his is, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I am reminded of that quotation every time I look at his picture framed in my office.

We all must strive to be accepting and compassionate, embracing the principles of Dr. King. Love, compassion, respect—it’s saddening how some opt for the opposite of those qualities when dealing with each other. No one becomes great by making others look small.
