Norris Board Votes To Keep Nepotism Ordinance In Place

The Norris City Village Board met last night for their regular monthly meeting.  Scott Mareing was there and has this report…

First, board members Wayne McKenzie, Kevin Pettijohn and Larry Garlick were sworn in as they were re-elected to the board.

The Nepotism Ordinance was discussed, trying to decide whether to keep it or do away with it.  Board members Joe Skaggs and McKenzie said they didn’t think it was needed as it is a small town with many being related to each other, and they should be looking for the most qualified and reliable candidate for the job.  After much discussion, the board voted to keep the ordinance in place with members Skaggs and McKenzie voting to rescind it and Garlick and Judy Daubs voting to keep it.  Pettijohn voted to abstain as he saw both sides of the issue and couldn’t come to a decision.  Mayor Skip Land broke the tie and voted to keep the ordinance, so it remains on the books.

David Doerner of the American Legion addressed the board about the Veterans Appreciation Dinner to be held on Saturday, May 13th at the Legion.  There will also be a cornhole tournament with proceeds to go to Honor Flight.  Doerner asked the board about the liquor ordinance and consumption of alcohol at the event.  If people purchase alcohol and take it outside for the tournament, they will be allowed to do so as long it is in an enclosed area.  Doerner said he would put a tarp up around the fence outside so no one would be allowed to take their drinks off the property, which was acceptable to the Mayor and board members.

Registered letters were sent to nine residences about cleaning up their properties.  Most are doing so but they will be watched closely to be sure they comply.

Donations to the playground and ball field have been coming in and are still being accepted, Novacom is coming in on Wednesday to install the cameras, and remaining wooden benches will be replaced with aluminum ones.

Spots for repairs to the sidewalks throughout town have been marked out.  Work will be done in sections.

Mayor Skip Land said there will be no more Comp Time and changes will be made to their Overtime policy.

Jake Rush will do tree service for the village a reduced rates.

There were no Police Reports or Animal Control Reports made available.

The board adjourned at 8:33 PM.

The next meeting of the Village Board is Monday, June 5th at 7 PM.
