Southeastern Illinois College will inaugurate its 2024-25 Student Government members on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. in a ceremony to induct new members and swear in officers. This year’s Student Government consists of 17 representatives from across Southern Illinois, providing a voice for the student body. Each campus club is represented by a member, alongside eight senators elected by the student body.
The group, which meets bi-monthly, serves as the representative body for students, hosting activities and collaborating with SIC administrators to enhance student life on campus. This year, Student Government plans to expand student involvement in campus activities and work on sustainability initiatives, continuing its tradition of leadership and service.
In past years, SIC Student Government led initiatives such as a campus-wide food drive for Freddie’s Pantry, raising over 1,000 items for the student food pantry. This year, the organization will reopen the pantry for the fall semester on Oct. 7, and students are already brainstorming fresh ways to support campus and community needs.
Student Government has also partnered with college administrators on key projects, such as the renovation of the fitness center, the construction of the tornado memorial, and the Student Center patio and fountain project. With a focus on improving campus spaces, the group continues to work on enhancing SIC’s facilities for future students.
Among its regular activities, Student Government will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive in the spring, co-host video game tournaments in November and March with the Math and Science Club, and bring speakers to campus to discuss current events relevant to students.
“Our mission this year is to make campus life even more vibrant and inclusive,” said Student Body President Skyler Edwards. “We’re excited to bring fresh ideas to the table and continue making a positive impact for all SIC students.”
Established in 1962, SIC Student Government has a long-standing history of leadership, service, and improving the student experience on campus. In addition to traditional events such as the fall cookout and scavenger hunt, this year will feature new engagement activities to build connections and foster community.
