HARRISBURG, Ill. (March 24, 2021) – The Southeastern Illinois College Theatre program is excited to add a new Competitive Acting Scholarship to engage a new form of performance for students. Those recruited for the team will compete against regional colleges and universities in Reader’s Theatre. SIC plans to award five competitive acting scholarships per academic year.
According to SIC theater instructor Gareth York, Readers Theater is a competitive acting event in which the performers present dramatic readings of material with minimal sets and costumes. The performances are twenty-five minute presentations that involve storytelling, singing, dancing and drama.
“This is a way for our theatre students to up their game and put their skills to the test,” said York. “It will be nice to see them rewarded for hard work and have the benefit of hearing constructive critiques from others in the industry. Usually applause is the only reward in college theatre, but a little friendly competition and seeing the abilities of their peers could really encourage them to grow their talents in vying for those awards.”
All scholarship recipients must be enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and maintain good academic standing. Students receiving the Competitive Acting Scholarship are expected to participate in competitions in addition to auditioning and participating in all theatre productions offered in the fall and spring semesters. This scholarship is renewable for two total years of competition and includes up to 19 credit hours per semester of in-district tuition and fees.
