Carmi Police responded to the area of 726 Shipley Street early Wednesday morning in reference to an active theft report and someone throwing things at a residence.
White County Sheriff’s Department was busy on a Felony traffic stop arrest at the time and Carmi police responded. Upon arrival of one officer, suspects could be seen running south toward Summit Street with flashlights. Another officer was approaching South Summit and witnessed a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed and running a stop sign. The officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle and after witnessing the suspect vehicle continuing to accelerate and disobey stop signs initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was now westbound on Stewart Street and disobeyed stop signs while still accelerating. The vehicle continued out Stewart Street and was unable to maneuver the corner onto County Road 1000 East and struck the ditch bank causing debris to fly out of the truck bed and into the roadway and yard. The suspect vehicle continued northbound on 1000 East. The officer attempted to miss the items in the roadway as well as maneuver the corner and applied the brakes causing him to lose traction and leave the roadway and into the ditch and yard. The officer was able to gain control of the vehicle and continue on as the suspect vehicle then pulled into the ditch on the east side of the road, a few hundred yards down the roadway.
At that time, two juvenile suspects fled the truck on foot and into the cemetery. The driver, Joseph McKay was taken into custody. The front passenger, Shelby Brewster Holloman, was later taken into custody as well. There were two remaining juveniles inside the vehicle and the two fleeing juveniles were later identified. The juveniles were released to their parents and caregivers and a DCFS hotline report was filed.
As a result of the incident, McKay and Holloman were housed at the White County Jail.
McKay was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding with speeds 21 mph over the limit, aggravated fleeing and eluding with disobedience of two or more traffic control devices, driving while license was revoked, possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl) unlawful use of a weapon by a felon (ammunition) endangering the life of a child, speeding 40 mph or more over posted limit and disobeying a stop sign.
Brewster-Holloman was charged with obstructing justice, possession of meth, unlawful use of property, possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl), violation of an order of protection and unlawful possession of ammunition with a FOID.
White County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. White County Sheriff’s Department also took a signed complaint from the resident at 726 Shipley for theft and disorderly conduct.
Additional charges are expected to be filed according to Carmi Chief of Police Jason Carter.
