Local Sports Recap – October 31, 2022

The Carmi-White County Bulldog football team had their season come to an end on Saturday at the hands of the Athens Warriors in the first round of the IHSA Playoffs by a final score of 48-8. Carmi took an 8-7 lead midway through the first quarter after Warren Legg found Isaac King for a 33-yard touchdown pass, but that would be the only score from the Carmi offense. Athens would score 21-straight-first half  points to take a 28-8 halftime lead, before scoring 3 more times in the second half to pull away with their 9th consecutive first round playoff victory. The Bulldogs end their season with a record of 7-3, their best finish since 2016. Congratulations to the Dogs on a great season, and congratulations to all 10 seniors on great football careers – Isaac King, Warren Legg, Tyler Goemaat, Draxtyn Aud, Branten Stockton, Layne Gwaltney, Nate Brown, Jaxon Staton, Chase Pringle and Bryson Moore.

In other playoff action from Saturday, Fairfield went on the road and upset Virden North Mac 20-19, they will host Pana on Saturday at 4 PM. Johnston City defeated Flora 36-20, they will travel to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond on Saturday. Sesser-Valier defeated Central A&M in the first round of the 1A playoffs 49-12. They will travel to Camp Point Central this weekend. In the 3A bracket Harrisburg fell to Tolono-Unity 21-0. Mt. Carmel snuck past Monticello 8-6, the Golden Aces will travel to Tolono for a rematch of last year’s semi final this weekend. 

Congratulations to CWC senior Tanner Spence for finishing 9th at the cross-country sectional meet in Benton on Saturday, advancing him to state this weekend.
