Local Sports Recap – November 3, 2022

Congratulations to the NCOE Fighting Cardinals Volleyball team for winning the 1A Webber Sectional Championship last night with a 3-set victory over Effingham St. Anthony, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-11. The Fighting Cardinals will take on Trico in the Super Sectional this Friday night at Christ Our Rock Lutheran high school in Centralia. A win for NCOE on Friday will send them to the state for the 2nd time in 4 seasons. 

In 2A Volleyball action last night, Fairfield lost a 3-set heartbreaker to Freeburg in the Benton Sectional Championship, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-19.

Looking ahead to local football teams that will be in action this weekend in the 2nd round of the IHSA Football playoffs. In the 1A bracket, Sesser-Valier will travel to Camp Point Central.

In the 2A bracket, Fairfield will host Pana. Johnston City will travel to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond. And Athens, who defeated Carmi-White County last week, will host the #1 team in 2A, Decatur St. Theresa.

In 3A, Mt. Carmel will travel to Tolono-Unity. And in 4A, Carterville will host Coal City and Murphysboro will travel to Macomb. 

In local college basketball last night, USI defeated Midway 85-50 in their first ever Division I contest.

Evansville defeated Huntington 74-64.

Wabash Valley defeated Greenville JV 135-93.

Murray State defeated Brescia 102-57.
