Kiwanis Hears from 4Hers ahead of Annual Fair

The Carmi Kiwanis Club has been around for over 100 years.  White County 4-H beats it by a couple years, now in it’s 103rd year.  Amy McCarty with the University of Illinois Extension says the program still honors tradition while also evolving for future interests.  She, along with a handful of 4-Hers joined Kiwanis Thursday to preview the upcoming fair.  The program continues to enjoy high enrollment and is active in the community.

Whether it’s cleaning out flowerbeds at the local nursing home, making lap blankets for local veterans for the Southern Illinois Honor Flight, preparing a sweet treat for seniors around Valentine’s Day, or writing cards and letters to soldiers overseas, our members are making a positive impact in our communities.  We currently have six active clubs in our county:  The Grayville Go-Getters, Centerville Ripsnorters, the Mad Hatters, Enfield Blue Ribbons, the 76 Clovers of Norris City, and War Horse.  We also have a very active Shooting Sports SPIN Club, Leathermaking SPIN Club, and a White County 4-H Gift Garden SPIN Club.

The annual 4-H Show begins Saturday, July 6th and runs through Friday, July 12th.  This year, 170 4-Hers are enrolled in more than 1,000 exhibits at the fair.  4-H members will display their projects, get interviewed by a judge, and then receive a rating based on the overall quality of the project and interview.  The goal is for members to be selected as a Best of Show, State Fair delegate, or Grand Champion.
