Joyner Therapy Talks Path to a Healthier You

Dr. Brian Joyner is a small town guy, one of the smallest towns actually.  Joyner hails from Cave-in-Rock where he graduated (Hardin County High School) before moving on to the University of Evansville, and eventually getting his doctorate in Physical Therapy from St. Augustine.  He says while the therapy business can be competitive, his background is uniquely suited to that.

“Kinda always been the small guy and being the small guy you’ve gotta provide services that nobody else can provide.  I think one of the reasons we’re successful is when somebody comes through that door, they’re going to be treated like family…from the front desk people to the tech people to the therapists.  We’re gonna sit down and we’re going to listen to you.  Listen to your problems, listen to whatever your goals are and then we’re going to develop a plan for you; an individualized program for that.”

Joyner says that’s led to more repeat customers and those folks becoming Joyner’s biggest customers.  He also says he’s proud of the Carmi location specifically for working diligently to recruit homegrown talent.  The staff in Carmi is made up of Peggy Pretzsch who was Joyner’s first administrative assistant when the clinic opened up in 2012, Meagan Drone, Dr. Lucas Matsel, Dalton Bartley, and newest therapist, Paige Winter, a 2016 CWCHS graduate.

Over his career, Joyner says he’s made note of a trend and developed a program to address it.

“Over the last 30 years, this is something dear to my heart, I’ve noticed people who have retired; they’ve worked their whole life, retired and then they’ve become sedentary after their retirement and the next thing you know they start declining in health.  The next thing you know they fall, break a hip, and that’s just a downward trend.  In thinking of those things, I’m going ‘what can we do to help that?’ so a colleague and I decided we’re going to develop our own balance program.”

Joyner says one out of four individuals aged 65 and older who fall and break a hip don’t make it.  If there’s a fountain of youth, staying active is it according to the doctor.

“the importance of staying physically fit, keeping your balance, keeping physically strong, that’s the best path to a healthier you.”
