Handgun Training courses returning to RLC this Spring

NA, Ill. (Nov. 30, 2015) – Three Handgun Training classes are back at Rend Lake College this Spring by popular demand. RLC’s Basic, Advanced, and Low Light Engagement training courses are opening for enrollment to anyone in Southern Illinois.

RLC will offer three handgun training courses this Spring, starting with Basic Handgun Training. There are five class dates to pick from, each of which last from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Coal Mine Training Center (CMTC), Room 107A, on the Ina campus and at the RLC Shooting Range behind the CMTC. Classes meet on the following Saturdays: April 2, April 23, June 18, July 16, or Aug. 27.Each class is led by Instructor Jeff Bullard, Detective Captain of the Mt. Vernon Police Department.

The Basic class will give participants an overview of the laws pertaining to civilian use of force, types of handguns, and ammunition, in addition to hands-on lessons in stance, gripping, loading and unloading, clearing malfunctions, firing, and the rules of the range. Students will also use RLC’s Shooting Range to practice skills learned in the classroom.

Once you’ve gotten the basics, register for RLC’s Advanced Handgun Training course, which will be held from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CMTC, Room 107A.

The classroom portion of the Advanced class includes an in-depth look at the laws of civilian use of force, weak-hand shooting, one-hand shooting, one-hand reloading, shooting on the move, and range rules. On the RLC Shooting Range, Bullard will help participants test their marksmanship using techniques learned in class. The Basic course is a required prerequisite.

After mastering the advanced course, enroll in Low Light Engagement Handgun Training, scheduled for 2 – 10 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the CMTC, Room 107A.

Participants in the Low Light course will learn about the importance of illumination tools and their use, principles of lighting, mindset for a low light engagement, flashlight-weapon techniques, and the rules of the range. Bullard will focus drills on the RLC Shooting Range to include shooting with handheld illumination, shooting from cover, and moving with and without light.

To all of the handgun training courses, participants should bring eye and ear protection, a handgun, ammunition (150 rounds), and a valid FOID card. Those in the Low Light Engagement Handgun Training class should also bring an illumination tool. Participants must be over the age of 18. Each class costs $50.

Once students have completed a course, they may also retake the range portion during a scheduled class. For the Basic course, students may attend from noon – 4 p.m. for a cost of $30 per person; for the Advanced course, students may attend from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for a cost of $35 per person; and for the Low Light course, students may attend from 6 – 10 p.m. for a cost of $30 per person.

The location of the courses is subject to change based on room availability. Attendees will be notified of any changes during registration.
