Hamilton County States Attorney Justin Hood announced Thursday morning that a plea deal has been reached in Hamilton County Court that will send a registered sex offender to prison for five years.
28 year old John D. Smith will serve that sentence in Illinois Department of Corrections custody after a guilty plea for failing to notify a change of address. According to the release, Smith moved from McLeansboro to the Carmi area, but did not notify authorities within the three day timeframe required. In addition, Smith will be under mandatory court supervision following incarceration.
The case was investigated by the McLeansboro Police Department, who took Smith into custody on October 19th. Smith is being held at the White County Jail, where he will remain until transfer to DOC custody.
