Halloween Weather History
It looks like Halloween 2023 is going to be a chilly one, as the National Weather Service says highs will only be in the forties and overnight lows will drop in the twenties….chilly, compared to past Halloweens.
Climate data has been recorded at the Evansville Regional Airport since January of 1897, providing information on the highs and lows experienced on the spooky night as well as precipitation statistics for Halloween in the tri-state.
The warmest highs have been 85 on Halloween 1950. An 84 was recorded in 1933. It was 82 on October 31st of 1987.
1935 recorded an 81 with 1974, 1968, 1944 and 1900 all recording 80 as the high of the day. The normal high on October 31 is 64.
The coldest highs were 44 in 1993, 1954, 1930, 1925 and 1913.
It was 47 on Halloween 1947, 1949, 1923 and 1906.
The warmest lows were 66 in 2003; 63 in 1919 and 1900. A 62 was recorded in 1929 and the warmest low was 61 in 1982.
The coldest lows, which may be joined by this year’s low, were 25 in 1988; 26 in 1954 and 1925. It was 27 overnight in 2019, and 28 in 1923. The normal low is 42.
Most Halloweens have been dry throughout the recording period but over 2 inches of rain fell on Oct. 31 back in 1941. About an inch and nine tenths was recorded in 1972 and an inch and 35 hundreths fell on Halloween 1969.
The recent temperatures have been 64 as the high and a low of 53 last year (2022). It was 66 and 45 in 2021; 62 and 34 in 2020 and 50 and 27 in 2019.
With the current forecast it looks like Halloween 2023 will join the list as one of the colder Halloweens on record.
