Grayville Leaders Keep it Quick and Concise in Final Meeting Before Town Festival

Grayville leaders set a record in brevity Monday night with a 13-minute meeting.  Partially due to no executive session and also possibly due to it being the week of Grayville Days, no major action was taken.  The treasurer’s report revealed assets in excess of $3.2 million dollars.  All but $137,494 of that is tied up in restricted funds and investments.

Former finance commissioner and Council member David Jordan asked for some clarification on the recent business district plans and requested an update on the Wendy’s some locals were expecting to be operational by September.  To the Wendy’s question, Mayor Travis Thompson would only say that plans were progressing.  With regard to the business district set up, Jordan said he’d heard the city was considering raising the sales tax to 8.75%.  Thompson started with a no, and then added

Thompson:  So the city is going towards a business district which will be a 1% sales tax increase through the business district.  And then the business district is designed to help the existing businesses but also attract new businesses.  It works kind of like TIF, but there are some parameters of a business district that are more beneficial to the businesses.

Jordan:  But that’s passed on to the public, correct?

Thompson:    It is passed on to people purchasing stuff.

Jordan:  Does that not take a referendum?

Thompson:  No, not on the business district.

A public hearing on the proposed Business District will be held on September 9th at 6:30pm from City Hall.

In new business, council amended the loan agreement on file with CC’s Boutique.  The owner requested an additional $1,995 to be added on to her current loan with the city bringing her loan to $3,826.14 scheduled to be paid out over the course of nearly 4 years.  The boutique is planning to add permanent jewelry as a product/service line.  It was unanimously approved.

Finally, council agreed to grant a special G Class event liquor license for Bunting Enterprises.  The event is coming up August 31st and will be a wine tasting with Homestead Wineries out of West Salem.  Bunting Enterprises runs The Smokin’ Pig restaurant at the Grayville campground.
