25 year old Dakota Goodwin of Carmi was sentenced, in White County Court, Thursday, to 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections plus 1 year Mandatory Supervised Release on a class 3 felony charge of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. Goodwin was additionally sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections plus 1 year Mandatory Supervised Release on a class 4 felony charge of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Goodwin was on probation in the possession of a controlled substance case when an investigation and arrest by the Carmi Police Department with assistance from the White County Sheriff’s Department determined that he had been in possession of a firearm in September 2020. Consequently, his probation was revoked in that case with a new sentence entered in it, as well as the sentence entered in the possession of a weapon by a felon case. Goodwin was represented by Jonathan Turpin. Judge T. Scott Webb was the presiding judge. Court was conducted via zoom due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases.
