The Carmi-White County School Board met Tuesday night instead of the usual Monday night due to the MLK holiday.
Scott Mareing was there and has this report
The board approved the renewal of the Ohio and Wabash Valley Regional Vocational System Intergovernmental Agreement. The agreement was approved on December 14th by the OWVRVS Board of Control, and now must be approved with a majority vote from each of the Boards of Education of all voting members of the system. This allows the district to continue receiving Federal Perkins grant funds and State CTEI grant funds.
It was agreed to accept the recommendation of the board’s Athletic Committee to name the small gym at the Carmi Junior/Senior High School the Georgia Bramlet Gymnasium. Bramlet was employed at Carmi Township Community High School from 1964 to 1985. She taught girl’s physical education, coached girl’s sports and served as Athletic Director until her retirement in 1984. Bramlet was the first coach of all girl’s sports, serving as head coach in basketball and softball from 1974 to 1977, and volleyball and track from 1973 to 1978. She is also a member of the Carmi Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony to name the small gym in Georgia Bramlet’s honor will be held on Monday, February 7th, before the final varsity girls’ basketball game of the regular season vs. Wayne County.
Also approved was the adoption of the TRS Supplemental Savings Plan, which is a tax-favored retirement savings vehicle intended to supplement the retirement benefits provided by the TRS defined benefit plan. Also approved was the Supplemental Savings Plan Employer Participation Agreement.
And the board accepted the bid of Southern Bus and Mobility for one 8-passenger Ford Transit Van with wheelchair lift for $62,951.
In the Superintendent’s Report, Brad Lee said the district’s most recent enrollment figures show that it has 1,339 students district-wide, which is 19 fewer than last year at this time. Lee thanked all those who played a role in the Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament being held this week. To date the district has used just one emergency day due to the weather and that day will be made up at the end of the year. If no other emergency days are used, the last attendance day for students would be May 23rd and the last day for staff would be May 24th. And Lee said there has been an increase in the number of students and staff testing positive for COVID and being quarantined due to close contact, with the vast majority of close contacts coming from outside the school. He appreciates the efforts of everyone, and says staff are going above and beyond to cover for each other and continue to provide our students with a quality education.
For the month of December, the district received total funds of $4,504,090, including $69,458 from the 1% sales tax.
In other business, the board approved the Board Scholars for the first semester of the 2021-22 school year. There were 25 freshmen, 17 sophomores, 15 juniors and 14 seniors. Also approved were final adoption of two Board Policies and changes in 53 board policies, which must be acted on at two meetings to go into effect. They accepted the retirement of Charles “Randy” Warrick as Director of Operations and Maintenance effective at the end of the 2021-22 school year, as well as the resignations of Patricia Trout as Speech Teacher at Lincoln School effective February 9th and Chris Shelton as High School Softball Coach effective immediately.
