One Step Up Dance Studio has made the move from south Florida to Carmi and is open for business. Somer Helwig says she offers a variety of classes for a variety of ages.
We offer point, ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and acrobatics for ages 2-18. We also offer adult work out. Tuesday we have strengthening/weights/tone-up classes and Thursdays we have cardio.
She says One Step Up’s style resembles Broadway/Rockette form. Dancing has been a lifelong passion for Helwig as well as her mother.
My mother Heather Watkins has been dancing since the age of 3. She also danced in middle and high school performing arts and she was also a dancer in the high school band. I’ve been dancing since the age of 2. I also performed in middle and high school dance teams. We performed at Disney and in front of elementary, middle, and high school students.
The most common question Helwig has gotten since making her way to the area from south Florida…”what brought you here?”. She seems to be settling in nicely though.
Everybody always asks this. So we moved here in November after I had my now 8 month old son. My grandma and my mom were both born and raised in Evansville so it’s close. In south Florida, it’s really congested and there’s a high crime rate, and it’s really expensive to live. My grandma was ready to retire and she didn’t think she could do it there so Carmi it is! I actually live in Herald so I’m close, but I get to have farm animals…ducks, chickens, goats…and we’re still adding on to that.
