City of Carmi Issues Statement on Signs Placed in Right of Ways

Due to several questions, the City of Carmi is issuing a friendly reminder that pursuant to City Ordinance No. 1092 (effective May 1985) and the Illinois Highway Advertising Control Act of 1971 (225 ILCS 440/) signs placed in the right of way are not allowed. This includes political signs in addition to signs advertising products, services, yard sales, real estate, events, etc.

Signs may be placed on personal and private property, but should be placed between the sidewalk and house. Signs between the sidewalk and road are not allowed. Per Ordinance 1091 no sign of any kind may be placed upon City property.

Additionally, if you place a sign on private property, you must have permission of the property owner.
