A 29 year old Chandler, Indiana man led Posey County authorities on a chase following a traffic stop late Wednesday night. Indiana State Trooper Zack Fulton had pulled Cody McCool over on State Route 62 for a headlight violation. It was when McCool showed signs of impairment that things went south. After refusing to follow directions during field sobriety tests, McCool hopped back in his ’03 Pontiac and sped off into Mt. Vernon where authorities say he traveled down several city streets before heading back east.
A Posey County Sheriff’s Deputy deployed “stop sticks”, but the report indicates McCool drove off the roadway to avoid them and in doing so narrowly missed the deputy.
The chase led into Vanderburgh County and eventually Warrick County. Mutliple deployments of “stop sticks” damaged McCool’s tires and he was eventually traveling on just rims. He’d lose control once he got back to Chandler and crashed into a ditch on Monroe Avenue. A six minute foot chase ended with McCool being tased by Indiana State Police. He was taken to Deaconess Gateway Hospital for minor injuries and subsequently transported to the Posey County Jail where he remains.
He’s been charged with a Level 6 felony of Ciminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon (Vehicle), Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, and Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated by way of his refusal to participate in the field sobriety tests.
Mt. Vernon Police, Posey County Sheriff’s deputies, the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office, Vanderburgh County law enforcement along with Evansville, Newburgh, and Chandler Police all assisted in the pursuit and arrest.
