Carmi School Talks Budget, Resignations, and New Hire

The Carmi White County School Board met briefly for its regular monthly session Monday night.  Scott Mareing was there and has this report…

The board passed the Fiscal Year 2025 tentative budget and placed it on display for a minimum of 30 days.  Final action is set for a special September meeting of the board.  There will be a public hearing and adoption of the budget at a Special Board Meeting on Monday, September 23rd at 6:45 PM before the regular meeting is held at 7 o’clock.  It means that the School Board will meet on the fourth Monday of the month, instead of the usual third Monday.

Lance Barbre contacted Superintendent Jarrod Newell and told him that Edgewood LTD would like to donate Lot #7 in the west division of their development to the school district with the hopes of assisting a future building trades project.  This endowment would be made on behalf of the founding members of Edgewood. The board members all agreed to let Newell look into the proposal further.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Newell discussed the breakfast for all staff and a staff meeting at the junior/senior high school on Monday, August 12th.  After opening remarks, building principals introduced new staff members, gave building updates, and then staff returned to their respective buildings for in service work for the remainder of the day and on Tuesday the 13th.  Students began school last week on Wednesday, August 14th with a one hour early dismissal that continued until the end of the week, allowing students to become acclimated to school and for staff to prepare for the school year.  This practice has been utilized over the past several years and has been very successful.  Newell also complimented the summer employees for the outstanding job they do in preparing district buildings for the beginning of the year.

There was also an update on Dual Credit and Vocational programs at Carmi White County High School.  The goal is to prepare students for college.

Repairs to the roof of Lincoln School should be finished this week.

The Consent Agenda was approved.  It included final approval on four board policies as amended and $225 in donations to the Jefferson Attendance Center

The board went into Closed Session to discuss personnel at 7:19 PM where board members approved of all resignations, one new hire, a retirement, reassignment.
