At Thursday’s meeting of the Carmi Rotary club, Ashley Elliott was on hand to give the Rotarians an update on the summer lunch program.
Ashely told the club that this is the ninth year for the sack lunch program, and several changes have taken place this year. The biggest change has been the relocation of the program from several Carmi spots to one location, the Seed Station on Steward Street. This building, formerly known as Brown’s Feed Store, is perfectly equipped for this endeavor, and is centrally located in Carmi. As in year’s past, there are also drop spots in Maunie and Crossville, and delivery is available to those folks who can’t make it to a drop location.
Ashley explained that around thirty churches have volunteered either help, money or products this year, as well as many, many local businesses and civic groups. All of these donations are crucial to the success of this much needed program.
She stated that around 100 lunches per day are being handed out at the Seed Station location, although she joked that it is a guessing game each day to know how many meals to prepare.
Lunches are distributed at the Seed Station between 11:00am and 11:15am, Monday through Friday each week. (With the coming exceptions of July 4th week and Labor Day week).
In club business, plans were made for the annual Rotary year-end picnic. The Rotary year officially ends on June 30th, and on that date the Carmi club will meet at Burrell’s woods for the year end celebration.
The club also firmed up plans to attend an Otter’s game in Evansville on July 7th. Anyone planning an event that day should take a look at the weather, since every year the Rotarian’s trip to the Otter’s game is ruined by rain!
Sherri Logan won the 50/50 drawing but did not capture the day’s cash prize. And, keeping it in the family, Tom Logan was named as the day’s phantom.
The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this civic organization is welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
