A Carmi man was taken into custody over the weekend for leaving the scene of an accident. On Saturday, November 6th, a Deputy with the White County Sheriff’s department was dispatched to a one vehicle accident on Highway 1, South of Carmi. It was unknown at the time, if there were any injuries and the Officer had been advised that the driver had left the scene on foot. While getting a statement from an individual who had witnessed the crash the, driver of the vehicle returned to the scene. Patrick E Vaughn, 25, of 911 Stewart Street in Carmi, told Officer’s that he was being chased and it had been happening all day. When asked why he fled the scene, Vaughn said that the engine had messed up and that the vehicle started to smell like chemicals and something started coming out of the hood of the vehicle. Patrick said this is what caused him to lose control of the vehicle and go off the road. Vaughn stated that there were several cars during this time. Vaughn was advised that he was under arrest for leaving the scene of an accident. Vaughn was searched but nothing was located on him, the Officer also searched the vehicle in which no contraband was found.
Vaughn was then transported to the White County Jail while the remaining Officer’s helped to clear the scene.
Vaughn was charged with Leaving Scene of an Accident, Operation of Uninsured Motor Vehicle and Resisting/Obstructing Peace Officer/County Officer
