Carmi City Council is staying busy modernizing ordinances. That includes 6 ordinances to replace old, outdated language at Tuesday night’s gathering. Alderman Steve Winkleman asked for an explanation after the group approved language updating the half dozen ordinances tackled.
Winkleman: “I noticed that we, seems like every meeting, we’re passing all kinds of ordinances. I don’t remember in past years hardly ever passing ordinances; is there a reason? Are we upgrading; what’s taking place?”
City Clerk Cynthia Attebury: “That’s why. At last meeting, when you passed the updated fire department ordinance, you had them coming in with horses and the water tank, I’m not kidding, on a buggy. So some of these are so outdated and have never been updated.”
Among the ordinances being updated, three amended utility taps including water, sewer, and electric. Ordinance 1621 deals with building codes; 1622 establishes building and demolition permit fees for businesses within city limits.
Also Tuesday night, Mayor Jeff Pollard reported ticket sales for the Carmi Fest Eclipse Festival are at about 300 as of now. He’s also secured about $30,500 in sponsorship dollars.
With no executive session, council adjourned at 5:49pm. Council will next gather on March 5th.
