Bulldog Wrestlers Take 2nd at Marion Tournament

It was an exciting day for the Carmi-White County wrestling team on Saturday as they took part in the Marion Tournament.

The Bulldogs finished in 2nd Place after falling to Waterloo in the championship match.

The tournament was split into two divisions, the small school division and the large school division with the Bulldogs being placed in the small school division with Johnston City, Carlyle, Goreville and Red Bud.

Carmi started the tournament off with a 54-29 win over Johnston City.

Gage Anderson, Travor Mason, Conner Benham, Jazz Duckworth and Stone McGhee all won their matches via forfeit.

Timothy James pinned his opponent in the 150 weight class in 1:04
Caleb Seibers pinned his opponent in the 175 weight class in 3:59
Nelson Rider pinned his opponent in the 190 weight class in just 0:26
Gavin Peyton pinned his opponent in the 285 weight class in just 2:33

The Bulldogs then defeated Carlyle 54-29

Konner Buchanan, Gage Anderson, Madden Anderson, Jazz Duckworth, Stone McGhee and Joey Shaffer all won by forfeit.

Nelson Rider pinned his opponent in the 190 weight class in just 0:58
Gavin Peyton pinned his opponent in the 285 weight class in just 0:10
Caleb Seibers pinned his opponent in the 175 weight class in 1:31

Carmi then went on to defeat Goreville 60-24

Gage Anderson, Travor Mason, Conner Benham, Joey Shaffer and Caleb Seibers all won via forfeit.

Kale Wiggins pinned his opponent in the 138 weight class in 3:01
Stone McGhee pinned his opponent in the 150 weight class in 1:53
Nelson Rider pinned his opponent in the 190 weight class in just 0:29
Konner Buchanan pinned his opponent in the 215 weight class in just 0:19

Carmi then matched up with Red Bud in the small school championship match, and won a 42-38 nailbiter.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Gage Anderson received a forfeit at 106.

Travor Mason extended that CWC lead to 12-0 after pinning his opponent in the 113 weight class in just 41 seconds.

Conner Benham then extended that lead to 18-0 after pinning his opponent in the 120 weight class in just 31 seconds.

Carmi then found themselves ahead 24-6 after Madden Anderson received a forfeit in 132.

The tide quickly turned however. Red Bud won the next 6 matches to go ahead 38-24.

Down to their last breathe, Terry Gholson looked to his seniors to step up – and they did just that.

Nelson Rider pinned his opponent in the 190 weight class in 3:50 and Gavin Peyton received a forfeit in the 215 weight class to cut Red Bud’s lead to 38-36.

In the final match, Konner Buchanan pinned his opponent in just 15 seconds to give the Bulldogs the come-from-behind 42-38 victory.

The win moved Carmi into the tournament championship to face Waterloo, a school almost twice the size of CWC.

Their size proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, Carmi fell 52-24 to take home 2nd Place. 

In the championship match, Caleb Seibers and Konner Buchanan pinned their opponents meanwhile Gavin Peyton and Travor Mason received forfeits. 

” I am incredibly proud of our athletes & coaching staff on an amazing day.” said coach Gholson. 

The Bulldog wrestlers will travel to Robinson on Wednesday.
