Carmi Police began investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries which occurred between December 6 and the 8th.
During the vehicle burglaries, numerous unlocked vehicles were ransacked and items were taken. Most items were taken from unlocked vehicles and consisted of cash, knives and handguns. There were no vehicles entered that were locked and only unlocked vehicles were entered.
After compiling numerous home surveillance video footage throughout the time frame of the burglaries, police were able to develop a suspect.
Carmi Chief of Police Jason Carter reported a search warrant for 132 Fair Street was sought and obtained around 12:12 Monday afternoon and officers from the Carmi Police Department and White County Sheriff’s Department executed the search warrant about 12:40.
During the execution of the search warrant one of the stolen firearms was recovered along with ammunition and knives.
As a result a 16 year old male was taken into custody and later transferred into the custody of the Franklin County Detention Center, where he was housed pending an appearance before a judge.
The 16 year old was charged with multiple counts of vehicle burglary and theft as well as possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of ammunition by a felon.
Later in the evening, a second stolen firearm was recovered from another location after additional information was obtained on where the juvenile had stashed the weapon. The report has been forwarded to the White County State’s Attorney for prosecution.
Carmi police urge citizens to local all vehicles and buildings at all times. Additionally, do not leave items of value inside your vehicle. Chief Carter also urged local residents to report any and all suspicious behavior.
