Phelps Encourages Residents to Sign Up for Vehicle Registration Renewal Reminders

Brandon PhelpsTo help residents avoid paying fines, state Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, is calling on motorists to register for email reminders through the Secretary of State’s website to notify them about renewing their vehicle registration.

“Hard-working residents shouldn’t have to pay the price for the governor’s refusal to compromise and work with us to create a responsible budget,” Phelps said. “I want to ensure drivers can receive the necessary information efficiently and in a timely manner so they can avoid any fines.”

The Secretary of State’s office recently announced that due to the current budget impasse they would no longer be mailing out vehicle registration reminders, a move estimated to save $450,000 each month. The office plans to continue mailing out renewal stickers, titles and licenses plates, and residents can still receive assistance by visiting their local DMV.

In light of Governor Rauner’s unwillingness to craft a new state budget, Phelps wants to help residents avoid paying any fines for failing to renew their vehicle registration. Motorists can visit https://www.ilsos.gov/greenmail/ and enter the registration ID and PIN number on their current registration card. For those who do not have their current card, or if they need assistance with this sign-up, drivers can call the Secretary of State’s Public Inquiry Division at 800-252-8980.

“We have to work together to find a bi-partisan solution, but the budget cannot be balanced on the backs of hard-working Southern Illinoisans,” Phelps said. “My door is always open, and I want residents to pick up the phone and call if they need help. This email notification is important to help folks save money at a time when the state is struggling to fund vital services. I hope everyone will take advantage of this helpful reminder.”

For assistance with this issue or other state programs and services, residents can contact Phelps’ office at 618-253-4189 or [email protected].
