The eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.  Veteran’s Day ceremonies around the nation took place Thursday and Carmi held it’s annual commemoration as well in Veterans Memorial Park.  Organizations came together including the White County VFW Post, American Legion, respected auxiliaries, representatives from the City of Carmi, Daughters of the American Revolution, and more.  Barbara Karger from the Wabash Chapter of the DAR…

This the anniversary of the end of World War I.  This holiday gives we Americans the opportunity to thank our current service members and honor those who have paid the ultimate price.  And it gives us a day to honor these veterans for all wars.

Paul Hayse, this year’s keynote speaker recalled the story of Michael and Maro Mazzarello, youngsters who after finding war medals while hunting action figures in a collectible shop made it their mission to get the medals returned where they belonged, with the family of Private Charles George, a war hero.

Mayor Jeff Pollard also gave remarks…

I personally feel that it is very important in this day and age that we all find with all of the tragedy surrounding us, that we really take a deep look and honor all the men and women who have paved the way for our freedom.  We are here today to honor and remember the men and women who have served our country in uniform during war and peace at home and abroad.  Their continuing sacrifices have allowed us to remain a free country as we know it today.  We especially want to honor and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom.

Laying of wreaths, a VFW three round volley, and TAPS also took place during the annual remembrance ceremony.
