State Representative Dave Severin confirms that the Carmi License Branch will remain in Carmi. It’s moving though. WROY/WRUL News talked with the legislator Tuesday afternoon and he says the branch will be open at it’s Oak Street location for the final day on Wednesday. The office will be closed on Thursday so staff can move and it will re-open in it’s new “temporary pop up” location within the SIC Carmi campus at 1700 College Avenue on Friday at 8:30am. Severin says he and Senator Terri Bryant will be on location Friday morning along with new SIC President Karen Weiss. The new location is being designated as temporary until a formal presentation and approval can be gained at the July 14th SIC Trustee meeting.
Below is the official release from the Secretary of State’s Office:
n a move designed to save taxpayer dollars and offer more convenience to Southeastern Illinois residents, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced the opening of a new DMV facility in Carmi.
The new DMV facility, located at White County Center at 1700 College Ave., will open to the public beginning on Friday, June 28.
Giannoulias’ office worked with State Representative Dave Severin (116th House District—Benton) and State Senator Terri Bryant (58th Senate District—Murphysboro) to find a new location to serve the residents of White County.
“This new facility is a win for White County residents and a win for taxpayers,” said Giannoulias, noting that all employees will retain their jobs working at the new facility.
“Relocating the Carmi facility allows us to offer residents a newer, larger facility in a more convenient location that comes without having to use taxpayer dollars to pay rent for basic government services.”
“Much work to understand the issues and find a solution for the citizens of Carmi and White County went into today’s announcement. All along, my goal was to ensure that DMV services continued without any interruption in an area of the state that needs services just like every other,” Severin said. “I’m thankful for the working relationship we have established between the city of Carmi and White County government with the Secretary of State’s Office. Ultimately, the citizens that pay taxes and are required to use the DMV will have the services they need, and that is what we were working towards.”
“I want to offer my thanks to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office for working in conjunction with my office and local stakeholders in the city of Carmi and White County to ensure that DMV services continue uninterrupted,” Bryant said. “Our taxpaying citizens deserve to have services close to home, and with the move to Southeastern Illinois College’s Carmi campus, DMV services will be available during convenient times at a convenient place. After hard work and much collaboration, I am truly pleased to see this situation resolved as a win-win for everyone involved.”
The current facility, located at 1128 Oak St., will close on Thursday while equipment is moved to the new location, which will open on Friday.
Giannoulias reminded White County residents to visit www.ilsos.gov to explore newly expanded digital services that may allow them to skip a trip to the DMV to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration.
