It was a heartbreaking loss for the Carmi-White County Lady Bulldogs yesterday, as they fell to Carterville in the IHSA 2A Sectional Semifinals by a final score of 1-0 in 14 innings.

The Lady Bulldogs just couldn’t get that timely hit when it mattered, but neither could Carterville until the bottom of the 14th when a leadoff double followed by a hard hit single brought home the winning run.

Carmi-White County went toe-to-toe with the #1 ranked team in the state, behind an unbelievable performance on the mound from Audrey Upton. In her final game as a Lady Bulldog, Upton threw 189 pitches over 13 innings, allowing just 1 run on 9 hits with 9 walks and 12 strikeouts.

The loss ends another memorable season for the Lady Bulldogs, they finish with a record of 22-7 which included a Black Diamond Conference Championship and their first Regional Championship since 2016.

Congratulations to Coach Stubblefield and the Lady Bulldogs on an outstanding season.

At Monday’s Carmi-White County USD 5 meeting, the School Board approved the hiring of Eric Dixon as the CWC Girls Basketball head coach. Dixon coached the Lady Bulldogs from 2001-2010 where he collected an overall record of 186-84. Dixon will enter the 2024 season needing 65 wins to tie his father, Don Dixon, for the most wins by a girls basketball coach in CWCHS history. Dixon takes over a girls basketball team that won 26 games this past season, and will be returning 3 of their 5 starters.

Today is the final day to vote for the WRUL Male & Female Athletes of the Year. The finalists are Mara Serafini, Johanna Smith, Audrey Upton, Landon Driscoll, Nelson Rider, and Caleb Seibers. Winners will be announced tomorrow at noon.

Best of luck to Kale Wiggins, Lane Connaway, Beck Huff, Noah Pollard, Mitchel Edwards, and Nelson Rider as they travel to Charleston this afternoon for the IHSA State Track Meet.
