The Carmi-White County baseball team had their season come to an end on Thursday at the hands of their conference rival, the Fairfield Mules by a final score of 1-0.
To say this game was a pitchers duel would be an understatement.
Gavin Holloman got the start for the Bulldogs, but it wasn’t an ideal start.
Holloman hit the first batter of the game, and Fairfield’s second batter laced a double off the center field wall to put the Mules in front 1-0 with nobody out in the 1st inning. Nobody could’ve predicted that it would be the game’s only run.
After the 1st inning, Holloman wasn’t the same. A combination of heat and off-speed helped Holloman cruise through the Fairfield order, only allowing one more hit in the final innings.
However, the Bulldog offense could never get going.
It took Carmi nearly 6 innings just to get their first hit. Landon Driscoll doubled, but was left stranded at 2nd base in the 6th inning.
In the 7th inning, Gavin Holloman worked a walk to lead off the inning and then stole 2nd base to get into scoring position.
Trayton Vickers grounded out to move Holloman just 90 feet away from scoring the tying run, but back-to-back pop outs from the Bulldog bats ended the threat, the game, and the season.
A stunning end to a memorable season.
The Bulldogs finish the year with a 20-9 record, it was their first 20-win season since 2006.
