Left an orphan at six years old, Kandi Davis grew up in Crossville, IL at her grandparents roadside motor lodge. Seven years earlier, at the Anna State Hospital, Davis’s mother had met her father at what was once known as the Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane. When Mary Ellen Davis was found dead in 1976 from a self-inflicted knife wound, her family believed it must’ve been suicide.
