Busy Meeting for C-WC School Board

The Carmi White County Unit 5 School Board met Monday night for its regularly monthly session.

As the start of the brief meeting, Kenny Hargrave was appointed as Board Secretary for the night as Barb Mitchell was absent.  Board members Fulkerson and Whetstone were also absent for the meeting.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Jarrod Newell gave building updates.  The steps at the Junior/Senior High School and Washington School have been completed.  The wall refinish at Jefferson has been completed, and the drain and boiler repairs are almost complete.  The Lincoln planter demo has been completed and they will now focus on the wall repairs.  The roof repairs at Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, and the Jr/Sr High School have not been completed yet.  Brownsville School had a water leak last week under the building that led to new water lines being run throughout the building.   Newell noted that Friday, October 20th is Principal Appreciation Day and thanked district administrators for their hard work.  October 16th to the 20th is National School Bus Safety Week, and Newell thanked the drivers and district transportation staff for their service to the students and the community, and for making safety the top priority.  The 2023 Illinois School Report Cards will be released on October 30th, with more information available in November.

Carmi-White County Athletic directors Trey Mason and Kurt Simon provided an update on Unit 5 sports programs.  Both thanked the various teams and their coaches for their fine work, and said the fall season is going very well.  And both praised Earthlink for its ability to provide an up-to-date schedule of events to the public.

The Consent Agenda was approved, which includes requiring school board members to fill out an estimated expense approval form for expense requests for travel, meals, and/or lodging.  It’s estimated that board members attending the school board conference in Chicago could be reimbursed up to $150 each.  Board members will not be reimbursed for their mileage. The consent agenda also included $425 in donations to Brownsville School and $50 to the Carmi-White County High School.

The board went into closed session at 7:26 PM to discuss personnel and an individual student matter.
