An Illinois State Trooper is being treated for non life threatening injuries after being shot during a call early Tuesday morning.
According to Illinois State Police, at around 3 a.m. ISP Troop 10 units responded to a motorists assist on eastbound I-64 at milepost 72 near Mt. Vernon. An altercation took place and the male suspect displayed a firearm. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and trooper. The trooper, a 16-year-veteran of the ISP, suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the gunfire during the incident and is being treated at a regional hospital. The suspect is deceased.
Initially all lanes of eastbound I-64 were closed, but were reopened at 6:25 a.m.
ISP Division of Internal Investigation is leading an active and on-going investigation. No further information is available.
