The Carmi-White County Lady Bulldog softball team picked up a late-inning 5-4 win over Goreville on Wednesday afternoon at Archie Brown Field.
Carmi had faced Goreville earlier in the year, defeating the Blackcats 12-1 in 5 innings back on April 8th. Wednesday’s win would not come nearly as easy.
Goreville struck early, putting up 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning to go up 2-0.
The Lady Dogs were able to get one back in the bottom of the 1st thanks to an RBI Sacrifice Fly by Mara Serafini that scored Addi Elliott. The Blackcats led 2-1 after 1.
Goreville added one more in the top of the 2nd and another in the 4th to take a 4-1 lead, they would hold that lead into the 6th inning.
Alayna Johnson began the home half of the 6th inning with a single. Caroline Simmons then found her way on base after reaching on an error.
Carmi was finally able to plate a run when Mia Evans singled to right field, scoring Johnson and making it a 4-2 game.
The next batter was Kadie Simmons, and she lined one down the left field line for a double that scored both C. Simmons and Evans, tying the game at 4-4.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t want to settle for a tie, instead they continued the 6th inning with a base hit from Alexa Knight, moving the winning run to 3rd base.
Audrey Upton then grounded out to 2nd base, but there was no throw to the plate, allowing Kadie Simmons to score with ease and putting the Lady Bulldogs ahead 5-4.
The Blackcats went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th inning and CWC held on for the 5-4 win on Senior Night.
On the mound, Audrey Upton went the distance allowing 4 runs, 2 of those were earned on 5 hits, 2 walks with 7 strikeouts.
At the plate,
Audrey Upton: 1-for-4, RBI
Addi Elliott: 1-for-3, R
Mara Serafini: RBI
Alayna Johnson: 2-for-3, R
Caroline Simmons: R
Mia Evans: 1-for-2, RBI, R
Kadie Simmons: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, R

The Lady Bulldogs imrove to 14-7 on the year. They will travel to Fairfield on Thursday for another battle with the Lady Mules, who they beat 9-1 on Tuesday.
A win for CWC would clinch at least a share of the Black Diamond Conference Championship. A CWC win and a Flora loss would give Carmi the outright conference title.
