Carmi White County School Board Accepts Several Resignations At Tuesday Nights Meeting

The Carmi-White County School Board met in its regular monthly session Tuesday instead of the usual Monday due to that being President’s Day.  Scott Mareing was there and has this report…

The Consent Agenda was approved.

It included a clarification of minutes of the December 19, 2022, regular board meeting; the 2023-2024 School Calendar; the Junior High completion ceremony and High School graduation and Baccalaureate dates; final action on changes in 32 board policies and preliminarily adoption of changes to one board policy with final action set for the March board meeting; a leave of absence request from Kylee Combs beginning February 9th; the retirements of Barbara McArthy and Hillary Gee, both effective at the end of the 2026-2027 school year; and the resignations of Tracey Bartley as a cook at the Washington School effective January 3rd, Rachel McGarrh as a high school science teacher and June Acord as the model early childhood parental training coordinator at Pre-K, both effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year, Devin Rankin as Carmi-White County junior high school assistant baseball coach effective immediately, and Cassie Parson as a student supervisor at Jefferson School effective March 3rd.

Board President Kent “Pete” Fulkerson read a statement concerning upcoming building repairs plus those that have already taken place, there will be a district maintenance handbook put together, and there will be quarterly reports on repairs everyone can follow.  He said it would be a lengthy process and everyone who has supported their efforts.

In the Superintendent’s report, Jerrod Newell said the spring musical “Back to the ‘80’s” will be performed by the CWCHS Fine Arts Department March 24th to the 26th;  students and staff will be on spring break from April 3rd to the 7th; Newell congratulated the Carmi-White County High School Academic Challenge Team on their second place finish in the regional at SIC.  They will advance to Sectionals on March 15th at SIU-Carbondale; and to-date they have used three emergency days due to the weather and if no other emergency dates are used, the last attendance day for students would be May23rd and the last day for staff would be May 24th.

The board went into Closed Session at 7:27 PM to discuss personnel and purchases.
