After 31 years and 8 months, Sheriff Randy Graves is hanging up his badge for the last time, headed to the farm, and probably to finish up a remodel that began a few years ago.
More than 50 folks were crammed in Carmi City Council Chambers to give well wishes while WROY/WRUL News was there to interview Graves during his come and go retirement event. That number also includes 4 other top law enforcement officers from other counties. Sheriffs Shannon Bradley from Gallatin County, Brandon Francis who traveled from Jasper County, Chris Otey from Wayne County, and Darby Boewe from Edwards County were all there to congratulate Graves on his final day.

Graves says going from Corrections Officer to Sheriff and having former Sheriff Doug Maier who hired him be the one to recommend him for the office was one of his proudest moments over the last 3 decades.
While Graves wouldn’t narrow down any one incident or situation in particular as the biggest challenge over his 30 years, he said simply the office of Sheriff is far and away the biggest hill he’s had to traverse. In doing so, he credits his time watching Maier as instrumental.
So what’s next for Graves?
The newly elected Sheriff, Jordan Weiss will officially be sworn in Thursday morning at the White County courthouse.
