It’s difficult to find a more joyful school building to be in than Brownsville and if you listen to students or faculty, they’ll say it’s always a good day to be a “Beagle”. Thursday morning was an exceptionally good day for Beagles as Janet Tate from the Illinois Education Association was on hand to present an $800 grant. In July of this year, Special Education Teachers Julie Moore and Tara Miller say they were discussing ways to make the upcoming school year a positive, fun experience. Moore says together they came up with some ideas on ways to partner with some special groups in the community. “During a zoom call two years ago with Wabash Christian Nursing Home, the Brownsville students learned about career opportunities at the nursing home. At the end of that zoom call, when asked if we (Brownsville School) could help the nursing home in any way, representatives told us they can always use craft supplies.”
This July, Moore and Miller decided to take it one step further applying for a SCORE grant through the IEA with the idea of doing two things to help build relationships. Moore explains what the money will go towards.
Tate, a former educator herself, works as the UniServ Director and tells us more about what the Illinois Education Association does for school districts throughout the state.
Moore says they’re so grateful for the opportunities given to students to partner with the community and show love and appreciation for these relationships.
