The Carmi-White County Bulldogs will host the Vienna-Goreville Eagles in week 2 of the 2022 high school football season.
In week 1, the Bulldogs dominated the Hamilton County Foxes, winning 46-6. For the Vienna-Goreville Eagles, it was a disappointing 55-12 loss to the Sesser-Valier Red Devils (CWC’s week 3 opponent).
This is very different season for the VG Eagles in many different aspects. Starting with the fact that the program did not have enough kids for a varsity squad for the 2021 season. However, they did have enough for a JV squad that went 1-3 on the year. That alone was enough to begin a complete rebuild, starting with a new head coach, Rob Womack. Womack is originally from Anna, Illinois, but he moved to Summerville, South Carolina in 1993 and he jumped on the chance to move back to southern Illinois and become a head football coach for the Eagles. After having only 16 kids on the roster in 2021, Vienna-Goreville will dress over 40 kids on Friday Night when they travel to Carmi.
Despite the feel-good, triumphant return of the Eagles, their debut last week against Sesser-Valier was everything but feel-good and triumphant. The Red Devils dominated every aspect of the game en route to a 55-12 victory.
“We understand that they’re behind as a program, not only from COVID but last year they didn’t even play football,” said CWC head coach Kurt Simon. “We don’t overlook anybody, we’re going to prepare the same way every week,” Simon added.
