Rotary learns about canning at Thursday meeting

Thursday’s meeting of the Carmi Rotary club, turned into a lively discussion on the art of canning. Rotarian Kenny Harrelson of Norris City was the day’s speaker, and he told the club that he is an avid canner.

Kenny explained that his parents canned for years, and canned lots of the food they ate every year. He said that canning seems very natural to him after watching and helping his parents for so many years.

Kenny brought some samples of his work; potatoes, green beans, tomato sauce, and even salsa that he canned this year. He also told the club that he likes to can beef vegetable soup and will be canning some turkey soup later this month.

The club had some good conversation about memories of parents and grandparents canning projects, as well as some talk about different kinds of jars from the past.

In club business, President JR Hubele reminded the members that this Saturday is the big event, the fall trivia contest. This event has grown from a small, fun night, in to the club’s major fund raising event of the year.

This year’s trivia contest will kick off at 6:00pm at the American Legion on Oak street. Teams need to be made up of four members, but can be less. The cost per team is $40.

There will be four rounds of ten questions each, coming from such topics as: history, science, geography, pop culture, food, and the Bible. There will be cash prizes for the top three teams. Finger food and beverages will be on hand for players and spectators.

There is no need to pre-register, just show up before the start time and have fun!

In a double play, Lynn Stephens won both the 50/50 drawing (did not win the cash prize) and was named the day’s phantom. No word if Lynn went straight out to buy a lottery ticket.

The Carmi Rotary club meets every Thursday at noon at the First United Methodist Church in Carmi. Anyone wishing to learn more about this worldwide civic club is more than welcome to attend a meeting or speak with any Carmi Rotarian.
