William L. “Bill” Yates, 77, of Carmi, Illinois, died Friday, November 22, 2024, at Silver Foxes Senior Living and Rehabilitation in McLeansboro, Illinois. He was born November 26, 1946, in Evansville, Indiana, the son of Oscar and Mary (Yates) Yates. He was married to Erma (Browning) Yates, and she survives.
Bill worked in industrial cleaning for over 25 years before his retirement. He was a member of New Beginnings Church of God in Carmi, Illinois. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and animals. But among his greatest joys was doting over his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Erma Yates of Carmi; son Dan (Sarah) Yates of Owensboro, Kentucky; daughter Melissa Nelson (Mike Withrow) of Mt. Erie, Illinois; sister-in-law Connie Yates of Carmi; grandchildren Andrea (Dylan) Gallego, Bradley Yates, Jason Nelson (Emma VanBrunt), Bailey Yates (Christian West), Briley Yates; great-grandchild Carter Gallego; a special aunt Ruthie Yates; a slough of nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Ringo.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Barbara Hodges; and brother David Yates.
Visitation and funeral are Monday, November 25, 2024, at New Beginnings Church of God in Carmi, Illinois. Visitation is 10 am followed by funeral at 12 noon. Burial is in Old Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, Illinois.
