Virginia Sue “Susie” Nichols
1948-2024

Virginia Sue "Susie" Nichols, 75, of Mt. Vernon, IL passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024 at her home in Mt. Vernon, IL.  Susie was born March 14, 1948 to Dwight Farris and Norma J. (Allen) Storey.  On November 18, 1994 she married Donald O. Nichols, who preceded her in death in 2012.

Susie had worked as a glass welder at Mt. Vernon Neon/Everbright.  She enjoyed flower gardening and working in her yard.  She loved spending time with friends and family, especially getting to visit with her grandkids.  She loved to cook, and she loved having Thanksgiving dinner with her family.  She had a kind heart, and frequently helped out those in need.  She was a longtime supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Susie is survived by a daughter Virginia Melton; 2 grandchildren: Adam (Dani) McCowen and Patrick McCowen; 3 great grandchildren: Gavin, Gauge, and Paisley; and 8 siblings: Charlie (Valerie) Farris of Dunlap, IL; Dixie Tucker of Tustin, CA; Elton “Bud” (Vickie) Storey of Mt. Vernon, IL; Alan (Pam) Farris of East Peoria, IL; Judi Farris (Dan) of Wildwood, MO; Diana (Rick) Bowman of Pekin, IL; Pam MacPhee (Roger) of McLeansboro, IL; Tom Storey of Mt. Vernon, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father Dwight Farris, her mother Norma J. (Allen) Storey, her step father Elton Storey, her husband Donald O. Nichols, 2 siblings: Reba French and Leroy Farris, a niece Melanie Tucker, and 2 nephews: Todd Farris and Robbie Morgan.

A private family visitation for Virginia Sue "Susie" Nichols will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.  A private family funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and interment will follow at Bruce Chapel Cemetery in Carmi, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
