Mark Allen Hoy, 51, of Carmi, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024. He was born on October 5, 1972, in Morris, Illinois, the son of Gerald Dean and Maureen (Allen) Hoy. Mark graduated from Carmi Christian School and went on to get his CDL's at Southeastern Illinois College. He worked at Hale Body Shop and more recently, for Joe's Lawn Care, as well as part time for Jansen's in Carmi.

Ellen Stokes Burgin, 94, of Indianapolis and formerly of Carmi, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family on August 12, 2024. Ellen was born September 21, 1929, near Crossville, Illinois, to Clarence M. and Nettie (Hughes) Stokes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald W. Burgin, of Detroit, Michigan; and her sister, Virginia Stokes (Don) Burris. Survivors are daughters Nancy (Gary) Burriss of Indianapolis and Joyce Burgin of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and grandchildren Natalie Burriss, Eric (Briana) Burriss, and Nicholas (Katlyn) Burriss, all of Indianapolis.

Carol Gene Griffis (nee Hughes), age 79, passed peacefully from this life on August 19, 2024, in Knoxville, Tennessee, following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by family and friends who walked her home gracefully with love, prayers, songs and stories. Born on December 23, 1944, in Eldorado, IL, Carol spent her early years in Evansville, Indiana, where she graduated from North High School and attended Evansville College for two years. She later moved to Florida and for the past twenty years she lived in Knoxville, where she could be closer to her children and grandchildren, and was a member of Phi Mu.

Dorothy Ann Ward, 87, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024, surrounded by her family. Dorothy’s “career” was always wife and mother first. When her children were young, she delighted in being a room mother at school and volunteered as a Brownie troop leader. She also became a certified EMT and served on the Grayville Ambulance Service for many years. Later, she worked at Best Western as the breakfast hostess.

Lee Wohlhueter, also affectionately known as Mr. Lee by many children throughout the years, 82, of Carmi, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024. He was born on October 17, 1941, in Maunie, Illinois, the son of Gilbert Lawrence and Zelma Valeda (Healy) Wohlhueter. Lee graduated from Carmi Township High School in 1959. He proudly served his country in the United States National Guard. Lee worked as a custodian at Big Prairie and Lincoln Elementary Schools from August, 1983, until June of 2014. He coached girls basketball at Carmi Middle School for several years. Lee was a member of Stewart Street Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He enjoyed going to church, keeping his truck clean, and most of all, he loved God.
