1949 - 2023
Gary Lee Whitley, 74, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023. He was born on April 5, 1949, in White County, the son of Glenn and Alice (Chapman) Whitley. Gary married Charlene Cleveland on July 16, 1977, and she survives. He graduated from Carmi Township High School in 1967. Gary worked in collections and later as a loan officer at The National Bank which later was Old National Bank in Carmi. He also worked in construction with his brother Jim Whitley. Gary was a member of the Elks in Carmi. He enjoyed tinkering, fixing things, golf cart riding and gardening. He was especially proud of his 200 pound pumpkin. Gary loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed spending time with and watching his grandkids play sports. In addition to his wife Charlene Whitley of Carmi, IL, Gary is survived by his children, April (Craig) McLin of Evansville, IN, and Jennifer (Brandon) Barbre of Carmi, IL; grandchildren, Gracyn, Whitley, Violet and Caleb Barbre and Griffin and Mason Reutter; a brother, David Whitley of Enfield, IL; his brother-in-law, Tom (Sandi) Cleveland; sisters-in-law, Trena Whitley and Donna Whitley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James "Jim" Whitley and Ronnie Whitley; and a sister-in-law, Karen Whitley. Funeral services for Gary Whitley will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until time of service on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Gary's memory to the CWC Booster Club and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, who is in charge of arrangements.
